Properly maintaining your vehicle’s engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, is essential to keep your car or motorbike running smoothly. Antifreeze prevents the engine from overheating in the summer and freezing in the winter. Here’s a simple guide to help you top it up.
Step 1: Gather What You Need
Before you begin, make sure you have the correct type of antifreeze for your vehicle, we recommend ChemCool, due to the extensive range, you'll always find what you need no matter what vehicle you drive. Check your owner’s manual or check our specification chart if you’re unsure. You’ll also need a clean funnel and a pair of gloves for safety.
Step 2: Park and Cool Down
Ensure your vehicle is parked on a level surface and turned off. Allow the engine to cool completely. Opening the coolant system while the engine is hot can be dangerous due to pressure buildup.
Step 3: Locate the Coolant Reservoir
Open the hood and locate the coolant reservoir. It’s usually a translucent plastic tank with markings for “MIN” and “MAX.” The location varies by vehicle, so consult your owner’s manual if needed.
Step 4: Check the Coolant Level
Look at the markings on the side of the reservoir to determine the current coolant level. If it’s below the “MIN” line, you’ll need to top it up.
Step 5: Add Antifreeze
Carefully unscrew the reservoir cap. Slowly pour the antifreeze (you can use a funnel for this) into the tank until it reaches the “MAX” line. Avoid overfilling, as this can cause pressure problems in the cooling system.
Step 6: Secure the Cap and Clean Up
Tighten the reservoir cap securely, wipe away any spills, and dispose of any used materials properly.
Bonus Tip: Regular Maintenance
Periodically check your coolant level, especially before long trips or during extreme weather changes. If you notice your coolant level dropping frequently, it could indicate a leak or other issue—consult a mechanic for further inspection.
Keeping your engine coolant topped up is a quick and easy way to ensure your vehicle stays in top condition. A little attention now can save you from costly repairs down the road!
